Some people laugh when they are uncomfortable. Or he may have legit laughed at the unexpected joke and then caught a steaming side-eye from his wife that got him up and moving.

That’s as much of an argument for it being a work.

I.E., no way was he going to be on anything but his best behavior.

I think this is exactly what happened. She immediately looked disgusted. Smith was laughing. Then the camera shot back to Rock, and Smith sauntering on stage for the smack.

Lot of weird shit going on in that sphere. Hollywood, though.

I'm 65 and have lived in the Deep South all my life. That's not the first time that I've seen someone deliver a smackdown over someone saying something to his lady that he felt was over the line.

Was it appropriate? No, and it would take someone saying something truly reprehensible to get me to do it, but I understand where the impulse comes from.

Could it be Hollywood image manipulation? Certainly. I just think that circumstances and how it went after Smith returned to his seat argues against that. I'm wondering if something had been said to Rock after some of his previous jokes at her expense. That might explain it a bit.

BTW. Richard Williams was not a fierce defender of his family. He left most of his 18 other children to fend for themselves without a father in their lives. Williams was a fierce defender of his meal tickets.

Don't have the slightest idea. Maybe a paycheck or people talking about Chris Rock. Other than that, I've got nothing.

That's the one thing that would make me lean unscripted. The outburst would have been less if it was.

    Indeed.

If we ask "who benefits?" the answer is neither Chris Rock nor Will Smith.

smith fucked any good that came from winning.
Smith would Have benefited had he lost. No one is talking about CODA or any of the other winners. Smith upstaged everyone else. The 2 owners of the supporting actor awards are getting no publicity. He’s denied them of their victory lap.
It’s all Will Smith and he’s the hero in the black community. Black man stands strong for his woman. Man bites rock
