Then a bunch of them didn’t because there was plenty of laughter for that joke — Schumer’s joke about Leo saving the planet for his girlfriends got a more cringy reaction that Rock’s if it was such a touchy subject

Always liked the calm subtlety of this one.

The slap is a distraction from this main truth. The Oscars are a celebration of going to the movies, except who’s going anymore? And when they go, it’s to see Comic Book Hero Guy 14.

Hey, I saw an Oscar winner. Summer of Soul. It was also the only movie I saw in a theater in 2021.

That was the only nominee I saw this year. It was good.

Then I'm guessing you weren't the target audience.

It was a bad prom from the wrong side of the tracks. From Schumer co-hosting (hey, at least her joke writers will get credit this time) to Megan “Thee” Stallion jumping into a widely enjoyed show tune and turning it into god knows what, from the death dance and the slap (that was a pretty weak hissyfit, Fresh Princess) to open belching as a joke and tits hanging out all over the place (even causing ABC to cut away during Smith’s Best Actor speech) the night was like the Clampets’ less worldly cousins got an invite to the big city shindig!

I got to thinking about this. Look at "Coda" winning Best Picture. It's obvious that there's no great push to put first-run movies into theaters anymore. And it makes me wonder when even the suburban multiplexes are going to go away.

When they do, it will be something lost. Going to a theater is different from watching a movie from your couch, and it's already become a quaint, odd trip into the past for anyone under 40.

With the size of TVs and in-home sound - you go to the theater and the screen looks "smaller" than what you would experience at home these days. I will say there is "something" about seeing a movie with a big crowd of strangers and all being caught up in it - kind of like going to a great game and sharing that experience with strangers - last felt it with Avengers End Game.

I enjoyed it, but it was just OK. It got the Oscar because the footage was an interesting find and more importantly because everyone loves Questlove.
