I’d argue it’s not a question of whether they’d have done so absent a pandemic, but rather how quickly they’d have done so absent a pandemic.

All alcoholics are, to some degree, drinking themselves to death. I don’t think there’s any doubt the pandemic exacerbated the factors that lead to it in the first place. The isolation, despair, anxiety, etc.

And, I don’t know this for sure, but I’d bet good money that a majority of alcohol-related deaths during COVID occurred in people who had already been abusing it for a decade or longer.

For the first time in forever, this thread has been bumped to the second page, which is both a good thing and likely a reflection of our current COVID fatigue.

A friend of mine recently lost a battle with alcoholism, body finally failed, and I don't think it's a coincidence that it came two years after work-from-home started. That really allowed him to drink all day, all night, while he was working.

I’m still stunned only 30 percent of people got their booster. Along with the usual anti-vaxx nitwits, awhole bunch of people who were claiming to be pro-science and pro-mask early in the pandemic were full of shit. I’d argue getting the booster was more of a slam dunk than getting the original shots. I was signed up and boosted within 12 hours of being eligible. It never occurred to me to go through two years of hell and then let my immunity shrink in half. Is that drive to the Walgreens so onerous?

Our selfishness should be an argument in favor of getting boosted.

    Not for refusing to.

Welp, two years in, we've been hit. A child in my son's day care popped positive over the weekend, so now my wife and I are scrambling to be home with the kids, who have to quarantine, and do our jobs, which are better done in person than on Zoom. The boy had symptoms but has tested negative three times, I've felt vaguely fluish as well, but it may just be what he has, and I've tested negative twice, as has my wife. Our daughter is five months old, so she has to quarantine for 10 days, and they don't really have home tests for infants... Sigh.
