Milwaukee used to have some fine German restaurants, but most of them have died out. The only prominent one left is Mader's, which is kind of a tourist trap with lots of kitschy decor. The city's German history is well-known, but it also has a strong Sicilian heritage that's reflected in some great pizza restaurants. http://www.balistreris.com/italian-american-ristorante-dinner

Getting back to Chicagoland for the first time in seven years this summer ... and will find a way to stop here:

Papa Passero's Family Pizzeria, Westmont, Ill. (western suburbs).

Started as a old house converted into a carry-out/delivery only pizzeria in 1977. We moved into a home about a mile away from Papa's in 1978, and if I am told I could have one last piece of pizza (yes, piece ... they cut theirs up into squares), it would be from this joint.

From A-Jay’s Cheesesteaks in Morgan Hill, CA.

I’m not able to compare this to a genuine Philly place, but it’s good. And I’m totally not putting this here to subtly troll my So Cal brethren*

*The bottom cheesesteak is usually my order when I’m down that way… but again totally not taking a dig … *ahem*

The great thing about Yelp and the like is that you’re introduced to places you never would’ve tried. The bad thing is it’s no longer a hitting-for-the-cycle-like moment when you discover it, because everyone else already has.
