I don't what it says about La Salle that a 73-year-old was the only option. There's not some under 45 assistant somewhere that you couldn't convince to make the jump?

Coaches are like members of Congress. They just can’t quit.

Cleveland State will hire Iowa State assistant Daniyal Robinson. It will probably be on probation soon, since Kansas just won the national title.

Xavier's Jonas Hayes to Georgia State. Hayes just led the Musketeers to the NIT title as interim head coach.

Wow, saw a Steve Lavin to U of San Diego tweet. That really smacks of desperation.

I got nothing regarding Lee Rose. The guy evidently had issues and was happier as an assistant. I could name a dozen NCAA programs that changed coaches in the 1980s where he would've been in like Flynn.

The late 1970s-early 1980s were a weird time in college basketball — and a time when the financial disparity wasn’t in the same galaxy as it is today. Thus, you saw Gene Bartow leave UCLA to start the UAB program. Three years before that, Bill Gibson left Virginia for South Florida. (UVa had never posted a winning season since it had joined the ACC until Gibson’s tenure, although it took him eight seasons to get the Cavaliers above .500 for the first time.) Gibson died a year after arriving in Tampa, but USF had the bug of massive aspirations in its head. With a then-new arena opening, USF zeroed in on Rose, and the school gave him a massive pay bump to lure him from Purdue. But he couldn’t get the Bulls over the hump; in an era that saw the Sun Belt Conference consistently send multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament each year — including half of the conference’s membership (4 of 8) in 1986 — USF settled for three NIT bids. Tampa Bay is a notoriously fickle market, and attendance and interest sagged, leading to a curbing of USF’s basketball budget and ambitions. The final straw for him was when USF scheduled a series against the University of Tampa, which was then a massively successful D-II program (so successful that in that time period, Tampa hosted Jim Valvano-led N.C. State and won). Rose felt that scheduling a D-II program meant that USF was small-time, which in his mind, represented the school reneging on its initial promises to him. Rose left for an NBA assistant’s job in 1986 and no one was particularly displeased about it. He hated recruiting and massaging boosters’ egos, so, he was much happier in the NBA, where he only had to focus on ball and spent most of the next 22 years as an assistant coach and personnel executive.

At the time he went to USF Steinbrenner was spending $$$ and he reportedly was one of the main backers in recruiting Rose
