Do the newspaper boxes dispense a penny as change when you plug in 14 quarters?

Hell, do the mechs even accept 14 quarters?

Newspaper boxes are a relic. The last time I saw ones with papers that weren't free was in Chicago in 2018.

When I worked for a former Gannett paper 12 years ago I had a crack at taking home one of the old USA Today boxes that I never got around to because it wouldn't fit in the trunk of my car. Still regret it because they were unique looking.

They looked like TV sets. That was the first sign of the newspaper apocalypse.

Too bad, I bet the American Pickers would buy it.

During the Detroit newspaper strike we carried around popsicle sticks used to jam the coin slots in the boxes
At our 20th anniversary party one of the strikers took the box he had grabbed during the strike and returned it, placing it outside the News/Free Press building
The paper called the bomb squad and the cops went all over the box before declaring all clear

No, he was a copy editor but he got a chance to write his dream headline at the Sunday Journal, the strike paper
There was a report Pol Pot, the old Cambodian despot, had died
The headline: Head Red said dead

Gannett reported a 24% decline in head count last year. So assuming reductions continue at the same pace the company closes down in February, 2025. The last two employees will be Reid and the accountant who will calculate his golden parachute.
