There are some avid outdoorsmen and women here, no doubt.

Looking for suggestions on durable tents. TIA.

This can also double as a thread for all things great outdoors.

TIA ? Transient Ischemic Attack? Hope not.

Your best tent depends on a couple things. Will you be carrying it as you hike? Will it be a heavy-duty tent that never moves out of your back yard? For summer? For winter? 3-season? 4-season? Freestanding? Semi-freestanding? To sleep how many people? Price range?

The radiant warrior bride and I haul a Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL 2 with us when we section hike the Appalachian Trail because it only weighs 3 lbs. Pretty expensive, as most ultralights are. Technical / expedition tents can run into the thousands. Check retailers like REI and EMS for sales.

If you're looking to save a lot of money and pitch a very heavy tent in your garden that never goes anywhere, you can get something perfectly adequate from LL Bean or Dick's Sporting Goods or Target or Amazon. Brands like Kelty or Coleman are fine for that.

    And this:

I guess I'd ask what you want it for.

And if the answer is 'to live in,' then you and I need to have a different conversation. Via DM or whatever. I'm happy to take it off the board, but if that's why we're in here talking about tents, sorry, we need to talk.

    Really depends.

If you are hiking and need something lightweight and easily carried, you'll want a backpack tent. If you are driving to a camp sight and are just going to set up, you can go with more of a camping tent.

REI has done us really well with both types of tents (the tents are branded by REI). We have one 2-person tent from them that has gotten a ton of use and is at least 15 years old and it's been really durable and trustworthy. It doesn't look like much, but it even survived one pretty good wind and rain storm once, where we stayed dry as bone.

We call it our "ridiculous little tent" because we're always surrounded by people who lug a whole house with them to go camping, and we always just show up with that tiny tent, some wood, food and our backpacks.
