The belief in the Mark of the Beast is seriously underestimated in terms of vaccine hesitancy in MSM reporting. People at these outlets did not encounter the people who have been constructing these crazy end-time beliefs for decades until they started reporting on Trump rallies.

Those of us who got out of that world have been beating this drum for 20 years. They’ve been militant and crazed for decades, and susceptible to a right-wing/soft-fascist movement incorporating their pet issues for a very long time. Somebody finally figured out how to unleash them.

Even those who are not full-fledged Q are holding off on vaccines “just in case” it really is the Mark.

 

Crazy end time beliefs have been a thing since the start of time.

Jeff Sharlet and Sarah Kendzior have both been pretty good on this.

There has always been a far-right christianist / extremist / millenarianist splinter sect in this country.

But as you point out, the big change over the last few decades is how they've come to constitute the mainstream of the Republican party.
