Also: shooting down an incoming missile traveling at very low altitude is really, really hard.

Detection of a small craft moving at boat-moving speeds is hard. If that craft is traveling at missile speeds with net 0 altitude … You better see that thing early to have any chance.

Batman do you know about Russian CIWS systems? Do they have anything as good as Phalanx?

Right, I was familiar with the thread in question. What I was talking about last night was that the insights of military experts have been interesting as they answer questions such as the ones I posed.

The Slava class have three layers of air defence that theoretically should be capable of dealing with multiple missile attacks. 64 S-300F (NATO reporting name Grumble) area air defence missiles are carried in VLS cells amidships. 2 OSA-MA point defence missile systems (NATO reporting name Gecko) are mounted on the stern. The final layer comprises a total of 6 x AK-630 CIWS (6-barrelled 30mm Gatling guns). None of these systems could be described as modern. The distinctive dome-shaped 3R41 Volna fire control radar for the S-300F has only a 180º field of view and is antiquated when compared with Western equivalents.

I think the general incompetence* of the Russian military has been well established.

*I know they're massacring civilians, and raping them and imprisoning them. But, overall, the military has been wholly unable to achieve its objectives.

    There's your answer.

Moskva had gone through two full upgrades to get to that point, as well. Those are hugely expensive big deal dry dock procedures where they are (or should be) putting in all the very best shiny new gear.

A tech refresh for this type of gear takes years in dry dock. To get a new computer cabinet into a ship, one might have to literally cut a hole into the side, because you can't carry an enclosure down through passageways.

I know what we spend on our navy; given the Russian defense budget, there's no way they have enough money to keep these systems up.

Thinking about how many trillions of dollars we've spent over the years, how much we've kicked ass in the wars we have fought, and then seeing the Russian performance in Ukraine reminds me of the ending of the Hellen Keller musical episode from South Park.

Russia's Navy is an albatross around their neck. The USSR could dabble in it some, because it was budgeting based on the resources of many countries. It was hard for them even then. It's a mostly landlocked country without multiple good ports. Modern navies cost a shitpot full of money. When Vlad just had to have an aircraft carrier to keep up with the West for ego/power/propaganda reasons, that sucked a huge chunk of naval budget. Add that Putin and his thousand closest cronies have siphoned off a trillion dollars or better, money that should have gone to many other things including the defense budget. Playing at naval power has been extremely costly for them.

Hopefully China has a similar experience.

What wars has the United States won since the first Iraqi War? I would agree the USA certainly kicked ass in the initial stages in the Second Iraqi War and the War in Afghanistan I do not believe the final outcomes can be described as the USA kicking ass.
