I’m glad the overwrought safety theater is ending. Oh … wait … we still have to take off our shoes before we can board a plane? Nevermind!

Masked percentage on the train remains very high from what I've seen over the last week. Especially among riders over 30.

    TUESDAY, APRIL 19

    ■ In mid-April, the two Dog Stars stand vertically aligned in mid-twilight. Look southwest. Brilliant Sirius in Canis Major is below. Procyon in Canis Minor stands above it by 25°, two or three fists at arm's length.

It’s strange: we’re all good standing in long lines to show pictures of ourselves to board a flying bus. We’re good taking off clothing like belts and shoes. We’re good standing in a machine they can see through our clothes down to our naughty bits (though they supposedly make it so they can’t see them or match faces to naughty bits). We’re good not bringing liquid overa certain size. We’re good leaving our nail clippers in checked luggage.

But ask us to add one piece of cloth…

I suspect many will still choose to wear masks on flights in perpetuity.

Getting my second booster shot Thursday. Going to NYC next week to see a couple plays Alice wants to see. Since Broadway has very strict covid protocols for audiences, I will have minimal worries. Also, Amtrak, the only sane way to travel between NYC and Boston, will not lift its mask mandate.

Good for them. No harm done there.

Yep. I guess my decision would be made depending on how close I was to others. On a completely packed flight, I'd probably wear one. On a nine-hour flight from Heathrow where there was nobody in either seat next to me? I might not be so eager. But to each his/her own and I wouldn't argue/belittle anyone's choice.

A nine hour flight in a closed recirculating atmosphere, with 100-200 other people, is exactly when I'd mask to the max. The seats right beside me be damned, we're all breathing in the same tube.

As you said, your choice to make.

I'm far less concerned about airflow/circulation on planes than in other confined spaces. Most of the air comes from outside of the plane and cycles through HEPA filtration. It's anything but stagnant. Would be far more concerned about catching something, say, in a mosh pit in a 300-person club at a Hold Steady show, for instance.

My step mom—who downs vitamin C and other cold prevention snake oils—already said she may never fly without a mask again. My wife who has gotten sick a few times on flights may never go without one. And there’s plenty of people just like them. It just makes sense. If you can avoid cold, flu, Covid after flying in (edit) tight spaces, why wouldn’t you?

On another note, it’s currently 57 after morning showers. We’re going to dry out this afternoon, but more rain is expected at the end of the week.

Planes have the best air circulation and cleaning you will find in closed spaces.
