    Maybe.

Or the world might have been just as peaceful if we'd spent half that.

Especially if we'd spent the balance on alternative energy production, instead of paying for the cycle of low-boil petro-political resource wars we're in.

Or the world might have become a paradise if we had instead spent the equivalent on food and education and medicine for everyone on earth.

    Impossible to say.

    Whoa ...

I just stumbled on this 62-page thread from 8 years ago. And a lot of the same things we're posting about today was stated then.

    Crisis in the Ukraine

Michael Roth is a very good follow. Fluent in English and if you know college-level German, easy to understand his gist.

Opinion polls indicate German voters want a way harder line than does the German government.

They can want all day long until the oil and gas spigot shuts off. There's a reason why Realpolitik is a German word.

I'm not defending Germany, I'm just saying look at it from their perspective. It's in their interest to tread more lightly than their less economically-affected NATO colleagues.

As by far the richest nation in the EU, Germany is better positioned to seek alternative sources of energy than say, Lithuania, which has completely shut off Russian imports.
