With some early stumbles, it's "free" in New York State and New York City to folks who meet the economic criteria.

Every land-grant university - or professional / trade school equivalent - should be tuition-free for state residents.

I further think we need to dismantle this current federal loan structure, the unintended consequence of which has been to incentivize these skyrocketing tuition costs.

I feel the need to clarify again that “free speech” doesn’t mean anyone has the right to a captive audience.

I wonder what happens to students currently in college. I'm guessing they could be out of luck as the administration will change and so will the policy by the time they have to pay them back. That means some lousy timing for my family. I went back to school later and paid off that debt. My daughter is in college now. Oy.

College tuition has gone up so much because the loans are federally subsidized. I wouldn't even care if the interest was forgiven, but don't just clear the slate. Too many people in their 20s have have basically skated through life, and this would be just one more huge example of no accountability for them.

For me personally, my bachelor's degree was paid for by the GI Bill, scholarships, and Pell Grants. I didn't have any loans. I got a huge break on my masters, it cost me next to nothing.
I really don't know how my wife paid for her AA, BA, and MA, but that was so long ago, it was in the good old days of affordability. We paid off her doctorate in very short order, so the interest was minimal if we had any at all. But if they are just straight up giving people a free pass, I want back the 50K.

I won some scholarships, but going back to school for a Comp Sci degree cost me about $25,000 in loans. I've almost got them repaid, but if I never paid one dime back, the IRS would still be in the black subtracting that $25,000 from the increase in taxes I've paid over the last five years.

This is the answer. The biggest problem was that with minimum payments, you barely made a dent in the principal. I can get behind this idea.

Tucker's going to show up on set soon with a busted lip.

Put away your loyalties and everything else and just listen to the last part about McCarthy and the way Tucker delivers the words, the sentence, the surgical vitriol.

I think that would be a more sensible middle ground, but one-time forgiveness is also a problem. Put something in place to make things better long term. Otherwise, it is helping one group of people, but screwing everyone else.

If they are going to write legislation that forgives student debt, fixing the system that causes the problem should be a major feature of it.

I'm always in for the killing-and-eating-each-other stages of the GQP.
