David French and Russell Moore are extremely mainstream Christians with huge audiences. They’ve fiercely repudiated Trump.

Something I never thought of, but makes a ton of sense.

    I think we’re headed there.

I think close to a free education is possible if we jettison the idea of the residential campus and those amenities, the things we think of as “college.”

The ivy walls, the quadrangle, the social aspects will be the privilege of the wealthy once again. Everyone else will get a commuter/online community college for-profit education. Some of it will be for the better and some of it will be for the worse. It will be free, it will be impersonal and it will be cookie cutter. The majors will be utilitarian. Real intensive learning will need to be done independently. But that’s always kinda been the case, hasn’t it?

I’d love to see free four-year college but I don’t see a practical way to achieve that in the near future. I do think every state should take one existing university and convert it to a tuition-and-fee-free institution, and if possible heavily subsidize textbooks and housing. In return, this would need to be a bare bones operation, meaning no athletics, no fancy new rec center that looks like a resort spa, no budget to bring in celebrity speakers, no subsidized Greek housing, etc. If more dorm space is needed, it will be built as dorm rooms and not something that looks like a suite at the Westin.

I look at my three-year old and tell him he’s probably going to have to learn the way Orville and Wilbur Wright did. On his own. I have no confidence in the public education system not crumbling in the next 15 years.

Again, the right’s victory will be complete when it has turned me and my wife, the child of two public educators, into homeschool/independent study advocates because they've stripped the system down to scrap metal.

This. Also pump up the Community Colleges, who pump out tons of people who have gotten training in useful things that help them earn a decent wage and are valuable to society. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see us build something like Germany's apprenticeship programs, funneling young people to specific industries and trades.
