"My view is: Why would you make a truck driver, or a waitress, or a construction worker pay off the debt for somebody that got a PhD in gender studies? That's wrong."

That line is a winning issue for the GOP.

Almost a third of all student debt is owed by the wealthiest 20% of households and only 8% is owed by the bottom 20%, according to a study released in January by the Brookings Institution.

The proposal needs to be means-tested.

That’s funny, because all I hear about from the GQP is that lower-income people don’t pay taxes.

Construction workers and truck drivers aren’t that low income.

Most of them just don’t necessarily have a lot of debt.

If this thread is any indication, that ain't all you hear about from the party of Lincoln.

The means-testing part is ok by me.
Of course, the Trumpist klan can’t discuss anything without resorting to attacks on things they find threatening. Like knowledge. But most long-term government financial assistance is based on determination of need level. So that seems reasonable for debt forgiveness.

There's this other thing "long-term government financial assistance" tends to be based on, as well. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I don't think "at the stroke of a pen" is it.
