    Was the ball ever found?

    Yes
The official started the search time when Sergio was walking across the creek, which was premature. Sergio actually found his ball so could’ve saved a shot.

It's just classic compulsive gambler stuff. He was making a ton of money but he knew he would continue to make a lot of money, so he could rationalize the losses. The problem is that in the last couple years, even with the crazy PGA win, he had to know his greatest earning years were behind him. Highly doubt his endorsement cash was the same at age 50 than 35, and he simply wasn't going to win as much regularly on Tour (Champions wins are nice but a fraction of the cash, of course). Eventually a compulsive gambler will have to find "alternative" sources of income. Some guys rob from their parents and friends, Phil could be taking the Saudi money.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
    Unless it was Bubba.
    Or P.Reed

I think people are severely underestimating how much money Phil has. Between endorsements and earnings, he’s grossed close to $1 billion. Losing 40 million gambling is 4% of that. And I’m sure his accountants found ways to write all that off. It would be like one of us losing maybe $4000, and that’s if we are doing really really well. I think Phil will manage.

But Shipnuck made the valid point that if Phil lost $40 million from 2010-14 while making $40 million annually, the reality could have been that he was only breaking even or worse. Remember his Cali tax rant? He's paying taxes, his travel, Bones (eh, sometimes) and the rest of his entourage, plus maintaining his lifestyle with however many houses, private school tuitions, vacations, etc. And does anyone really think $40 million was the extent of the gambling?

Not saying he's not still loaded; his Tour pension alone should be nine figures when it kicks in. But the undercurrent of his Saudi rant and all sounds like a guy who is still grinding for big paydays, and why would that be?

Because he’s an incredibly rich white guy and the only amount that makes incredibly rich guys happy is more.

Do the math though, let’s say he’s taken in $800m for his career, that’s about $40M per year. He’s got expenses, agents, Bones, assts, etc which are likely at least 30%, leaving $560m, then taxes say 40%, leaving $300m, then spread that out each yr, which is $15m per.

Now $15M per yr is huge BUT how much does he spend each yr on food, shelter, entertainment? That’s where a squeeze hits fast.

Just think, when you started your career, how much did you spend each yr? As your pay grew, you would have been wealthier IF you kept the same level of spending, but not many do. Most increase the spending as income rises.

Many people increase their spending as their income rises because they start families.

It doesn't surprise me. Of all the people that go into making the PGA Tour ... players, caddies, agents, coaches, tournament officials, Tour HQ people ... Bones might have the most class of anyone I've ever dealt with. He will always have a job, either as a caddie or on TV, because no one treats people better than he does.

And he's a decades-long high-stakes gambler. Can you imagine how much it must take for Phil to sweat on an NFL Sunday?
