You know what doctors call women who use the rhythm method of contraception?

    Mothers.

Withdrawal might be worse. At that point control is often lacking, and a little goes a long way there.

That's where the part about more, better and earlier sex education comes in.

And better access to better contraceptives.

No no, mustn't teach kids about sex, because if you do they might try it.

Like they won't figure it out and try it if you keep them ignorant, they'll just be ignorant and unsafe about it.

Sex is dirty, hadn't you heard?

This is all about my point regarding how stupid we are when it comes to sex. This isn't just an undereducated or less privileged situation either. People don't know how sex works. Seriously. Step into a college clinic and see what those kids know about pregnancy, contraception, STI's, etc. Many would be floored.

Contraception is important and should be very inexpensive. Except the religious right has always worked to limit access to or ban contraception.

@WriteThinking has asked the question -- "Who doesn't have access to contraception these days?" -- and I suppose it remains unanswered because it's been much too fun to scream at her because she works from different priors. Nevertheless ... I was in line at the 7-11 just the other day and couldn't help but noticing all those Ultra-Ribbed this and Her-Pleasure thats right there waiting for customers.

I'm pretty sure Samaritan's Purse was behind the move a few years ago to make sure oral birth control did not move to OTC status.

I’ve been told that putting saltpeter in the water supply probably wouldn’t work.

    Sure.

But condoms aren't foolproof. And men have a habit of not wearing them. Or taking them off.

Oral and other contraceptives aren't necessarily free, or easy to access. Contraception Is Free To Women, Except When It's Not

At the state level, the Medicaid funding is often a tangle of local politics. Contraception in Medicaid: Improving Maternal and Infant Health | Medicaid

None of which matters if young people aren't alert to and aware of their options, beginning before adolescence. Teaching sex is another political struggle in this country.

As is undoing the political and cultural underpinnings of poverty in America. Which incentivizes the birth of more hopeless children into more hopeless circumstances.

Again - more than most here - I want to limit the number of abortions in this country. But it can't be done simply by outlawing abortion.
