Kasparov has been fighting Putin and gangsterism for decades. After the police beatings and detentions, I figure he's earned the right to think what he thinks and say what he says.

He's also been right about Putin's protection racket expansionism in Georgia and Chechnya and Crimea and Ukraine all along.

Not sure how or why Kasparov is a bad guy in any of this.

I’m referring to the almost-certain bloodlust to come if/when Russia loses. Not sure that’s the best approach.

The idea that this ends when Putin’s gone is misguided. He does not do this unless he has the tacit approval of some military leadership, even if they think he’s gone overboard. I hope I am proven to be incorrect.

I'm sure it's not, but after seeing what Putin's goons and terrorists have done to the civilian population of Ukraine, it's gonna be hard to counsel compassion and restraint.

Still, that's exactly what has to happen.

The Marshall Plan didn't involve Japan. Even so, although "we" take credit for "rebuil[ding] them," our outlays were far more modest than generally recognized (maybe nudging their GDP growth by a half percent). One might credibly argue that our "occupying them" played a far bigger role in their becoming allies and not sulking conquests.

Add Henry Kissinger to the "I thought he died decades ago" list.

Henry Kissinger died today at 101. His soul died at age 16.
