You said earlier that you had your phone on you. Now you may have put your phone down and picked his up by mistake. Which is it?

You better stay out of cell phone stores or any Best Buy. Who knows how many cell phones you could put in your pocket without any memory of picking them up?

I was focused on covering the game. I was not focused on what was in my pocket. Is it really that hard to understand?

You were so focused on the game that you didn't notice picking someone else's phone up, "from a few other phones on the counter," and you now can't get it straight whether you had your phone on you or not when you (without having any memory of it) took and pocketed someone else's phone.

Easy to understand. Difficult to believe.

Focused enough that I don’t remember all the details. As you could probably surmise, I’m not the most mindful person and I’ll admit that’s what I did wrong here. This is the first time I’ve been accused of anything like this. Ever. And I’ve been covering games longer than the guy who threw me out has been alive. Why would I suddenly start stealing things now?

Are your phone and his phone the same kind of phone? Same kind of case?
Holding someone else's phone is like holding someone else's keys. They're all similar, but each one is different enough that you kind of sense immediately that something is off. They have different weights, different shapes, different feels, different textures on the case.
I can see picking up the wrong phone if there are two or three sitting together on the counter. But unless the cases are identical how did you not notice right away that it wasn't yours?

Yes, the cases, at first glance, appeared similar. Both the same color and the same type of phone as best I can recall.
I’ll admit I should have been more careful. But I never intended to steal anything. I didn’t even know I had an extra phone in my possession until I took it out of my pocket.

I’m an old man! I’m confused! I thought I paid for it. Can you please help me find my home?

So the consensus is I’m a liar, a thief and nobody believes anything to the contrary?

The guy apparently heard it pinging in your pocket but you didn't. I'm sorry, but no one pays that much attention to a high school game.

I guess I’m done here. If nobody’s buying that it was an honest mistake. I guess there’s nothing left to say.
