We bitched about it then and tried to cheat to get around it, too.

And it would have been a lot worse, but it was kind of hard to get on the phone and organize protests when your party line was tied up.

How World War II Almost Broke American Politics

    Downright Trumpian, I'd say.

Looks like the Russians are throwing all their chips on Donbas. If they fail, the ground war is all but over. They have no trained reserves left to bring in. All they have left after that are missiles and a naval blockade.

Let them push as far as they can, take whatever they can get. Once they do, they still have all the same problems. Poor logistics, poorly trained and motivated troops, and Ukrainians who aren't going anywhere. They'll be lucky not to get cut off and chopped up over time.

Maybe, to your point, the Ukrainians are setting up a Cannae-like trap. Let the Russians plunge forward, envelop them and cut them off. Hopefully the Ukrainians wouldn't squander the rout like Hannibal did.

I'm not sure that they're setting a trap so much as letting them push forward and see what develops. The Rus have not been very adept at making a push and holding at their high water mark so far.
