The USGA made the right decision. They are not the PGA Tour. Those players qualified (or were exempt) fair and square. Maybe they write something into the rules for 2023 qualifying/exemptions, but it would have been a bullshit move to say that DJ isn't allowed to play because he's left the PGA Tour.

On the one hand, of course it was Christine Brennan. On the other, she's taking no prisoners here.

Gonna have to disagree about the USGA. And yes, I work for an AGA so I know plenty of people at the USGA, but they're opening themselves up to fucking lawsuits if they ban people for joining a Tour other than the PGA Tour since .... checks notes ... the USGA and the PGA Tour are completely different things.

Also, Christine Brennan can pound sand.

I think it would be bullshit if the USGA ever blocked players. It's an OPEN championship. In the long run, if LIV Golf doesn't get approved for world ranking points, then DJ, Na, etc., will eventually fall too far to be exempt. But then, if they want to go through qualifying, they should be allowed.

If the PGA of America doesn't let the guys play the PGA Championship because they're no longer PGA of America members by virtue of not being PGA Tour members, meh, that's petty but whatever. And of course the Augusta greencoats can and will do whatever the heck they want. But the U.S. Open should be sacred.

And DJ winning next week would be delicious.

Christine Brennan doesn't approve ... now that's a stunning development.

I can’t say I know Christine but she is a very nice lady
Her first job out of Northwestern was covering the Schnellenberger Canes for the Miami Herald
My first job out of MSU was Hillsdale

I could easily envision the USGA tweaking the wording on its entry forms beginning in ‘23 that would essentially make all these resigning players go through qualifying.

Yep, I agree--save for past champions from the past 10 years (which would include DJ). And that's fine. You just can't kick competitors out midstream when they've qualified (or were exempt) fairly.
