Was surprised the California Newspaper Publishers Association awards writers and photographers with certificates for first-place finishes in its state contest. Is this normal?

My state gives plaques for first place, certificates for second and third.
Fourth place is a set of steak knives.
    Fifth place, you're fired.

Ha... I think Rhode Island does certificates for second and third, but I can't remember if it's a plaque or a certificate for first place. For NESNE, I believe my first place finish was a framed certificate. I wasn't at the banquet though, so I don't know if they all came that way, or even if that was something my boss did for me. (We typically hung up the first place finishes for a year.)

Fourth place stabs everyone who finishes in sixth place and lower?

It's one of the privileges of finishing fourth.

I see a bad column break in its future.
