Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am, but I'm thinking the economic sanctions have lost whatever oomph they might have had. CNBC said this morning that Russia's oil production is up since pre-invasion dates, and the ruble is the world's best-performing currency in 2022. Clearly, sanctions aren't going to make Putin rethink his plan. Now what?

Seems like an apt metaphor for the entire Russian war effort.

The sanctions have not stopped Russia from selling energy. But they have severely hampered Russia's ability to BUY things it needs from the West. The ruble is "strong" in terms of its value because it's so restricted in its movement in foreign exchange. Sanctions have negatively impacted the average Russian's standard of living. But that takes a long time to generate political change. It's a lack iron deficiency. Eventually, the patient gets anemia, but it takes awhile.
