I think we’re underestimating how close the “close contact” would have to be in order for monkeypox to be spread during encounters in which a mask would be helpful.

Unless you’re, say, a nurse caring for someone with active monkeypox infection, you’re just not at risk for airborne transmission, and even in that scenario, the risk is minimal at best.

Getting it unknowingly in a public place from a stranger would likely require you to be face-to-face with said stranger, like less than a foot apart, for several minutes.

Like on the subway at rush hour?

You're right, of course. The chances of inhaling monkeypox are pretty low.

    But not zero.

I'm mostly mask-happy over covid - especially regarding the long-term health effects of multiple reinfections - but once my reading got me to 'open lung pustules,' I figured I'd pipe up about monkeypox likewise.

I don’t want to come off as anti-mask. I still mask up in certain places, and not just for COVID, but because I like not being sick. I got a cold while I was coaching my son’s basketball team through the playoffs, and wore a mask the entire time so I wouldn’t give a common cold to my players.

It’s a courtesy at this point, and quite literally the least I can do.

With monkey pox, it certainly can’t hurt. I’m just quick to point out how unnecessary they are because this reminds me a lot of the Ebola scare from a few years back, when some quack posited in the media that it could become airborne and incited a lot of unnecessary panic, because that’s as close to impossible as you can get in the field of medicine.

Speaking of subway masking, compliance sucks among tourists. Despite being mandatory.

Just sitting there, clueless breathers, respiring. WTF, people.

NYC residents (you can tell by the exhausted glower) continue to hover around 70%.

Also, the next Transit of Venus begins in December, 2117.

How is the signage on trains? I assume there are signs saying they're required, but people are just ignoring them. That's the problem with masking not being mandated anywhere else in the country, I s'pose.

The signage in stations, on platforms and on the train is still pretty good. And there's a recurring PA announcement on the platform and on the train.

I think some of it has to do with our tourist visitors from overseas - of whom there are many, happily - struggling with English.

The rest are I-Don't-Know-How-To-Give-A-Fuck-At-Home-So-I-Don't-Know-How-To-Give-A-Fuck-Here-Either domestic visitors.

As long as Omicron is still cooking, Mama Corona can stay in the living room and keep watching her stories.

But eventually Judge Judy will come on, and that will mean starting to bake the Pi.

Well then, if New Yorkers make up 77% (or greater) of the subway riders, and mask-wearing among them truly is at 70%, then th0se out-of-town breathers are in the minority of subway virus spewers.

Well, we haven't been very good to it ... worse, some idiots in suits tried to strip away the progress we had been making. Can we blame Mother Earth for the sentiment?
