I think Gaudreau’a agent completely misread the market. I think stronger offers were expected from NYI and NJ. It’s like those teams barely even bothered.

I thought CBJ had highest bid of the American teams, but I guess they didn’t. All around strange signing.

Columbus had the big signing but the market movers were Detroit and Ottawa
    Not what was expected

More than a few hockey fans in Calgary are a little pissed that JG dragged out the decision to test the market and hamstringing the Flames efforts to replace him. Obviously it was BS that he needed the extra time, he knew he wasn’t returning. In the Eastern Conference he won’t have the soft touches like Arizona, Seattle, SJ, Anaheim, Vancouver to pad his stats and it didn’t hurt that Tkachuk and Lindholm were good finishers. The East is a tougher more physical place to play, at least IMO, and not the wide open West.
I’m a season ticket holder so saw him play a lot of hockey and he’s very good at many things, his skating and passing skills are excellent. Shoot out and breakaways not so much. He’s temperamental and can sulk. He piled up the points by finally playing ‘pick the top corners’ which Calgary players are notoriously adverse to. ‘Shoot it where they ain’t’ He is fun to watch and exciting but not a guy to build a SC contender around.

Wouldn't mind seeing him in DC, though I doubt it will happen.

Good for Ryan Strome on the contract he got from Anaheim. He really resurrected his career when he came to the Rangers, plays his heart out, and he deserves what he got.

I think it's a testament to him that fans were a little disappointed with him at the end, because he really raised the expectations. When he first came over it was NY and Edmonton trading their problems (Strome for Ryan Spooner). Spooner is out of the league. A lot of the fans attributed Strome's numbers to playing next to Panarin, but it's telling that in the stretches that Panarin was out, Strome stepped up his game and produced just as well. He is not the best defensive forward, but Anaheim is getting a player who has some toughness. He's not big, but doesn't back down from anyone, and he was playing through a painful pelvis injury in the playoffs, which was why he looked so bad.

Thanks for this. Now, a scouting report on Vatrano, please.

Only got to see him for a minute.

Two things stuck out: 1) He is fast as hell, but oddly not an elite skater. If you need someone to get from point A to point B first, he is going to win the race a lot. 2) The guy loves to shoot. He is shoot first, second and third. That was great for the Rangers, because they had too many guys trying to make the extra pass. Vatrano scored a bunch of goals by just unloading the puck when it got near his stick. And he has a really good shot. A few times he caught goalies off guard with the shots he took.

Zibanejad and Kreider had been playing with a rotating cast of right wingers, most of whom had no talent, and Vatrano gelled with them immediately. It was a good spot for him, even if it was brief.

Defensively, he is sort of an odd player, too. I'd classify him as a slightly below average defender for a winger, but once or twice, when the other team had an odd man rush, he turned on his jets, got back and made a jaw-dropping kind of play.

I'll add one thing about Vatrano. Nobody builds their team around players like him, but he's the kind of depth player good teams always seem to have.

He's worth what he is getting, but you'd ideally want to get him more at the $2.5 million he was earning on his last contract.

He's the guy who can play anywhere in the lineup from your top line down to your fourth, depending on where your needs are at different points of the season.
