You’re probably right but teams will offer the same total on lesser years.

He’s obviously taking a huge chance, he could get hurt or fall off a cliff. But he will get more per year.

15 year deal? Arte Moreno is reaching for his checkbook.

Probably, but no way a 5-year deal can approach even half of $400+ million, right? But then again, who knows, it's all Monopoly money to me.

Betts had one year left and the Sox got Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong. They Sox also dumped Price, but paid some of his salary.

Speaking of Avila, the draft is tonight and picking 12th he won’t have it easy, although the only other time the Tigers picked 12th they got Kirk Gibson
The draft is filled at the top with hitters but they start to fade around the 12th pick
Everyone knows the Tigers need hitters but the best pitcher in the draft is RHP Brock Porter of Orchard Lake St. Mary, a high school just north of Detroit
If a bat doesn’t fall the local kid might be the pick, and after passing up Marcelo Mayer for Jackson Jobe last year, that would only raise the temperature of Avila’s seat

$440M over 15 years would not make Soto nearly the highest paid player on an annual basis today let alone in Year 10 of the deal.

Nats' owners are looking to sell the team; maybe Nats' fans should be happy abo0ut that. During recent times the Nats have:

Lost Bryce Harper to free agency
Lost Anthony Rendon to free agency
    Traded away Max Scherzer
About to trade away - - or lose via free agency in three years - - Juan Soto

That is a whole lot of talent to wave good-bye to ...

Could Washington afford Harper, Rendon, Scherzer and Soto at the same time? I don't know enough about the team or the ownership to know the answer to that.

At this time, not keeping Rendon was money well not spent.

As for Max, better to trade a guy a year early than to wait a year too late, as Branch Rickey always said. He looks great now, but he is 37 and did miss 8 weeks already this year. MLB history says most 37-year old pitchers are near the end of the line. Maybe he's another exception to the rule.

It all comes down to the age-old question: At what point does the specific $$ amount no longer make that much of a difference? Soto could take the deal and live the life of a king for the rest of his existence. To me, he just didn't want to be a National for the next 15 years.

The Nats payroll is 124 million and 58.5 mil of it is going to Strasburg and Corbin

Maybe I’m wrong, but long-term Verdugo is a decent pickup on its own for Betts if the deal permits future signings.

Reminder, contracts are not intended to be fair compensation for each year covered. It’s about how much is it worth to get in news? What are chances of getting better? Raising value of franchise? Increasing local TV deal? Getting more butts in seats? Selling luxury boxes? Increasing licensing fees?

If Soto makes you a legit contender, it might be worth $400M is first two years.

What is Curry with to Ws last 8 yrs?
Doesn’t work same in MLB but concept does.
