Over the weekend, I was catching up on my personal emails and saw a breathless announcement from Eastern Michigan's alumni relations office that Emoni Bates will be playing at my alma mater. I clicked on the link and it was from an external source. I then went to the athletic department website - the main and men's basketball pages - crickets.

The next day, the alumni relations office sent an apology, saying that it didn't check with the athletic department. Whoopsie.

I just checked the athletic department pages a few minutes ago, and still nothing - and Bates isn't listed on the 2022-23 roster.

I wonder if EMU will self-report, and if the NCAA will take action.

Which is hilarious because Bates announced he was transferring more than three weeks ago.

Are they not going to take him, either?
Maybe he can go to that Overtime Elite thingy in Atlanta.

There are lots of hoops schools have to go to in a transfer situation. Maybe they just haven't announced the signing because all the details aren't taken care of.

No way does EMU turn him down if he is good to go. If they don't want him Detroit would love to have him.

Some guy named Dylan Harper tweeted he's blessed to receive an offer from "the University of Duke."

Hey, the world needs one-year sociology majors, too.

Awful. I enjoy watching her play more than any other college basketball player, men's or women's game. Her passing, floor game, old-school midrange, three-point shooting, defense and passion elevate her above everyone else. Watched her since the 8th grade in MN state hoops tourney and this winter is going to be much more boring when she's not doing her thing, whether against another power on ESPN or the weekly Big East beatings on SNY.

Saw a tweet that this is why women should be able to be one and done. I've had this discussion for several years with some friends. Even if she could have gone after her first year or second year, I don't think she would have. The college game is simply much bigger than the WNBA. Taurasi, Moore, Bird did incredible things in the WNBA but I'd argue they're all still more well known for their UConn days. Same with many of the Tennessee stars. And dozens of others. And now with NILs, she is already set financially so isn't losing out on that.

With the way medicine and rehabs are today have no doubt she can come back at the same level like others have, but every time she stops or jumps from now on it's going to be nerve-racking.

Not to mention there's not enough money in the WNBA to make it appealing, especially with the advent of NIL. I agree with you, though, Bueckers is really fun to watch. Hope she recovers quickly!
