So back in the 80's Chess King (a young men's clothing store in the mall) commissioned fantasy artist Boris Vallejo to do ads for them in his customary style. This was the result.

Apparently the same marketing firm now does the ads for Axe Body Spray.

 

I'm a big Vallejo fan (and of his artist/model wife Julie Bell). I have several of his books and there are at least two Chess King ads in one of them.

 

You seen much of Larry Elmore's stuff? He's probably the best of the guys still mining that vein today. He's done D & D stuff and fantasy book covers (Dragonlance, etc) forever. Not as much skin as Boris but he's a talented guy.

 

Is it bad that I know both of these characters and remember being WTF when I read it?

 

I have not, NC. Cool. I have always loved fantasy art, even though I never liked fantasy movies, novels etc. The current Vallejo inheritor, in my opinion, is an Italian artist named Lucio Parrillo.
