Re the A-10s to Ukraine. My understanding is that this is half a dozen planes, not the whole fleet.

Flying A-10s over contested airspace is a terrible, terrible idea.

But maybe it’ll finally be the thing that breaks the fantastical love affair with the A-10.

Or maybe they’ll tear the Russians up and prove their value in close air support.

From what I've read, the A-10 is the world's best tankbuster as long as it's in our hands, since our first priority in a conflict to achieve air supremacy. In a war like Ukraine, where AA defenses and MANPADs are everywhere, the fact that they fly low and slow would make them easy pickings.
Of course, given how effective drones have been in this war, maybe the A-10 could be very useful if the Ukrainians pick their spots. It's hard to get a read on the state of the air war. It strangely doesn't seem to be as big of a factor as it should, for either side.

They're not making them anymore, which should make the U.S. very judicious in how many to let the Ukrainians have. But I've seen Warthogs in action and they do kick ass. Probably my favorite military aircraft still.

There was talk for a while of turning the fleet over to the Army Aviation Corps because the grunts loved them and wanted to keep them in operation.
