I think you'll find a lot of vaccine resistance among orthodox and Hasidic communities upstate. And in the city.

Plenty of tension between respecting people's beliefs and trying to get everyone protected.

How was the last polio case in the U.S. (in 2013) reacted to?

The world looked a lot different then. We were only a few months away from polio outbreaks being declared a public health emergency in almost two dozen countries.

That crisis has long since subsided and, in fact, polio has since been eliminated from Nigeria, one of only three remaining endemic countries.

I think the reaction to this latest case in New York is greatly amplified by several years of pandemic / vaccination hysteria.

Which of these is more informative with respect to how old I am?

    A) The father of a high school classmate, who everybody in my hometown knew, was a polio survivor who was confined to a wheelchair.

    2) Everyone who wasn't related to him knew him because he was the town's TV repairman.

Without a doubt. That’s why it would be good if someone were to issue a reminder that almost 90 percent of the world is vaccinated against polio, and the polio vaccine is almost 100 percent effective and lasts damn-near forever.

The smallpox vaccine so many of us olds got (i.e., the reason we have that little scar on our shoulders), its protection has long gone, right? We're no more immune to monkey pox than any unvaccinated person, right?

I don’t know, but it might. It definitely would’ve protected against monkeypox, and its protection lasted long enough to eradicate a disease from the planet, so it’s definitely possible.

The replicating smallpox vaccine the military still uses is good for about 10 years. But it’s different from the one that was used in gen-pop back in the day.
