He was. He was exactly the Tom Hanks you'd expect at 24 years old. He was a charming wiseacre, with a great mop of curly dark hair. Very Kip - very funny and quick and a little bemused by the sudden attention.

ABC was parachuting all their primetime stars into Mpls. / St. Paul that year because the affiliate there, KSTP, had changed networks. It had been an NBC shop since its radio founding in the 20s. But in 1979, it jumped to ABC. It was a huge deal at the time.

I worked at KSTP, so I had occasion to interview a lot of those folks as they came through town that year.

Including Henry Winkler.

Who I interviewed again 40 years and fifteen jobs later.
