The numbers I was looking at were from the US DOT (by way of another website). In looking closely I see that @Azrael's linked article had to do with the state of New York, which had a recent vehicular fatalities per 100K of 5.2. (I would assume that in the city of New York (it's what, 40%-ish of the state population-wise?) those numbers are even lower.) By way of comparison, in California it's 9.7 (on about 50% more vehicular miles traveled per capita).

 

You ride along the right stretch of highway 'round Houston and look at the miles and miles and miles of petroleum refining infrastructure, and suddenly the answer to the question "Why are there so damn many tort lawyer billboards on this road?" becomes crystal clear.
