Speaking of Juan Soto and the Nationals, I heard someone mention this a few days ago and thought it was pretty interesting. The current contract values of four players on the Nationals' 2019 championship team — Rendon, Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and Max Scherzer — total $760 million. Juan Soto just turned down a $450 million offer, and Trea Turner is probably going to get a nine-figure contract next offseason.
Throw in the $330 million that Bryce Harper got from the Phillies the year before, and the Nationals conceivably would have had to pay north of $1.6 billion to keep that 2018-19 team together for the long term.

I think this Phillies game in Pittsburgh is the first time I've watched them all season.
Do they always run the bases with their eyes closed?

45 through July. And Bonds went on a tear in August and September/October with 28 homers (an 84 home run pace). Judge will have to do that against teams in his division that may still have something to play for and the Yankees on cruise control through the middle of September.

But he could. I think the focus is on Maris’ Yankee record rather than Bonds’.

The abscess in the hip was a bad one. Mantle got some sort of shot from a crappy doctor and ended up with what was described as a hole in his hip the size of a golf ball.

Mantle tried to play in the World Series against the Reds, but could only play a couple of games.

Apologies if I missed it, but an obvious difference between Mantle and Trout is how good their teams were/are.

I realize we’re debating their talent (and injuries) as individuals, but Mantle was the star on one of baseball’s great dynasties.

If that was retaliation by the Mariners, it was utter garbage. Sure, the pitch to Rodriguez was inside, but he swung at it. That's how he got hurt.

    I don't think so, simply because ...

    1. Houston certainly did not hit Julio Rodriguez on purpose.
    2. With Ty France also missing Sunday's game, and the team scrambling to bring in outfielders (a double-A kid started before Jarred Kelenic finally made it to the stadium about the time the game started), Seattle was going to be even more offensively-challenged than usual.

POSTSCRIPT: Altuve came around to score one of two first-inning runs, giving the Astros an early lead. A late 2-run homer tied it for the M's, but they ultimately lost in the 10th inning, dropping six of seven to Houston in the past week.

Well, that's the most definitive move thus far from a team that wants to go places.
