That may be what happens. The question is if Soto wants to wait three years for his big payday and how much he listens to Boras. My guess is you are right and he will end up waiting for free agency.

It's not as if the Padres guaranteed themselves anything. If Tatis comes back and plays anywhere close to his normal self, the top of that lineup is certainly imposing, but they aren't catching the Dodgers and they hold the second Wild Card right now.

I'd be surprised if the other contenders are done. Do the Dodgers add a bat? What about the Cardinals or Mets? Now that Soto and Bell are gone, other things can happen. It seems that Contreras is going somewhere. He makes a lot of sense for the Mets.

One of the big snags for the Cardinals was supposedly refusing to include Dylan Carlson in the trade. I understand that they need to draw the line somewhere, but do you let hanging on to Dylan Carlson be the reason you don't get Juan Soto?

But he just picked up Ford Proctor! The Ford Proctor! Ya know, the guy who gives the exams at Ford repair school?

Not that I think the Giants should have gone all-in for Soto, but if this season doesn't prove that picking up bits and pieces in the bargain basement while everyone else is shopping at Macy's isn't the best strategy ... unless the strategy was to become Pirates West.

And after the game, there's time for a refreshing dip in Lake Tahoe.

I'm asking seriously because I don't have the energy/time to read up on it at the moment, but if Hosmer isn't dealt, does that kill the Soto trade or is the Soto trade done, but the Padres (for tax reasons) need to ship Hosmer? Or do the Padres really not like Hosmer?

Any other sport you could give the Nats a No.1 pick to take the contract
    Not baseball

I don’t think they can afford what’s left on the deal
Hosmer becoming the Kirstyn Sinema of baseball

The Soto trade is done without Hosmer. He was in the deal at one point, but blocked that with his no-trade clause.

The Padres want to unload his contract. With it, they are over the threshold. Also, they really they would have trouble finding him playing time with the addition of Bell.

They got the Red Sox to take Hosmer.
