Even at my most redneck, I made a conscience decision many years ago to rid myself of the "w" sound following a short "a" as in footbawl and the turning of "ow" to a long "I' as in "pire" (power), "shire" (shower), etc.
My in-laws and wife from eastern North Carolina tend to add an rhotic R after a short "a" ... one brother-in-law gives me shit about use of "ain't" but I always tell him I don't say "war-ter."

What are the distinctions? Lowcountry vs. Upstate vs. everywhere else? Or are they based on factors other than basic geography?

I’m guessing that’s not real. But it is amusing.

 

I wish I’d realized how fascinated I would become with accents later in life. In hindsight, I would’ve loved just studying accents all the time. I find it one of the most intriguing things about humanity.
