As Tess told Terry in Ocean's 11, "there's always someone watching."

Companies generally don't get to choose the workers comp. It is state law which companies have to cover which workers. All the computations for damages are set by the state and a board oversees the process. If the reporter had to be covered, Hearst couldn't screw him and generally have little to do or lose The station could try to have him not report the injury, but he would be suing them instead.

It has been a long time since I worked on this but when I did companies in Colorado could self insure. If they lost a case they paid.

Self insurance companies have to put up a bond and still have the same type of liability.

True. But when I was working on workers comp if we lost a claim the employer had an economic incentive not to pay the claim. We also had to pay a company to bond us. Colorado required this because they did not want a company that self insured to fold.

For our organization it was cheaper to pay for the bond and fight every claim rather than paying a blanket premium..

Did you have a state board to argue before?

    What issues would you argue?

Good. There shouldn’t be a bunch of hangers-on milling around the sidelines. And it should be easy enough for a legitimate outlet to get a pass from the state association.

Really can't blame them for doing that. From my experience, there are way too many hangers-on taking up space on the sidelines, and at the smaller schools (with less room on the sidelines, I'm surprised this stuff hasn't happened more often.

There is a caste system. Low-lifes in the stands, upper crust in the press box or sideline. "I'm better than you, I was on the sidelines during the game."

You would hope the state association does something. But implementing a statewide credentialing system, a couple of weeks before the season starts? I wouldn't hold my breath on that running smoothly. Or the security guard manning the fence who heard, "No one allowed on the sideline" recognizing a legitimate credential. Or the Class 3A football coach who is doubling as the athletic director to earn an extra $10K per year stipend taking the time from his busy week to throw something together.
Meanwhile, the TV people and photographers sprinting to two or three games in one night, or the folks trying to cover 40 or 50 high schools in their area, are going to have a nightmare on their hands trying to get credentials from dozens of schools.
Remember, there are plenty of people who view us as the hangers-on who don't need to be down there as we do our jobs.

The AHSAA, which is otherwise as advanced as an 8-track player, has had these for a while. I’m a little surprised they aren’t everywhere.
