Well, shit. My pre-flight Covid test came back positive, so I can't fly back to Hong Kong. I have free flight changes through the end of the year, but I have to eat the quarantine hotel cost (no refunds less than 14 days before scheduled arrival) and I don't know how long this will take to clear my system. There's a part of me that's furious and wants to know what I could've done differently, even though I know that's futile.

This isn't 2020 all over again, thankfully. I'm stuck in Omaha -- where I have a place to stay -- rather than Dallas. Plus, I have a job I can do from here, even if being 13 time zones away will require some rather late nights. I just wish this didn't all feel so damn inevitable.

Got a call from my Mom today. She and Dad both tested positive. First time for each of them.

Both of them had been very cautious for a long time, but they’re both in their late 70s and started getting tired of taking precautions. Last week, they went on a senior citizens bus trip to see a show, and now they have it, along with a neighbor who was also on the bus and her husband who likely caught it from her.

Mom had a low-grade fever yesterday, but it broke. Her stomach feels lousy today and she’s got a virtual appointment with her doctor tomorrow. Dad’s got mild symptoms.

Luckily, they’re quadruple-vaxxed. Our family took this shit seriously from the beginning. Still, it’s nerve-wracking.

    They'll be OK.

    Monitor for fever. Rest. Hydrate.

    Good luck.

My mom continually tested positive for a couple weeks, even though her symptoms were gone in a day or two.

We did three PCR tests and her doc finally told her to stop taking them, because the result wasn't going to change.

According to the numbers above, 1 out of every 2.5 cases is hospitalized.

Seems mighty high to me. We've had dozens on this board test positive (or mention family members who have). How many have been hospitalized?

    Oh dear. That's not encouraging.

She is past the contagious stage. She has remained cautious when she's out and about. My harping on her apparently paid off.

My guess is that the less serious positives never get reported to the counting agencies. If I test positive at home, I’m probably not going to report it myself.

When I tested positive I had no clue on how to report it. I rang my doctor's office and they were like, "uh-huh, sure, that's great, thanks for calling."
