It is worth remembering that early in the Trump administration, Michael Flynn and Tom Barrack were backing a plan to give U.S. nuclear reactor technology to the Saudis, in theory to generate power. The Saudis intended to have Russian engineers build these. The national security implications were so obvious that even though the principals stood to make a *lot* of money, some of which would have likely flowed back to Trump, it was shot down quickly and unceremoniously.

 

I turn 65 this month. Yesterday I received nine calls yesterday from persons who Indian accents offering counseling services about Medicare Advantage. I am sticking with Medicare.

Obamacare offers subsidies up to about 50k for single and about 105k for families of four so if you lose your job, at Gannett or anywhere else, one should get on the marketplace and compare to COBRA.

But be careful of the exclusions in any medical insurance policy that is not sold through the market place. I have a 60 year old relative who got laid off during the pandemic. He could not afford the $800 a month for COBRA on top of Denver area rents and signed up for a cheaper policy. This man does not read the fine print of policies where it explains the policy does not cover the cost of overnight hospital stays.

You have to be careful of those in any form of medical insurance. In an era where the out of pocket costs employees pay for the medical insurance through work rise every year, employers try to find ways to keep those monthly payments down. In part this is done through increased co-pays and higher deductibles that must be met, and those are fairly obvious and straightforward. What may not be is cuts to coverage or the outright elimination of some parts of it. This leads to people finding out after their kid is hospitalized that their medical coverage no longer covers speech therapy, and that it pays for a maximum of three occupational therapy visits per year - when the hospital rehab is scheduling both three to five days a week.

This sort of thing happens all across the board, and most people simply don't have the knowledge of medical treatment to see it coming, so they get blindsided, only finding out something is not covered too late. If they're lucky this comes out before they have already received services, but often the first they know about it is when they get a fat bill for their portion after the insurance pays nothing.

 

Then they're at the "and find out" stage, huh?

 

It’s worth asking, if Trump took this stuff for nefarious uses after he’s out of office, just imagine what he was doing when he had all the keys to the kingdom when he was in office.
