Pretty amazing from the famously relaxed Freddie. I didn't think he had serious opinions about anything.

BMW at Castle Pines in 2024.

Stroke play for the U.S. Am will be at Cherry Hills and Colorado Golf Club, which is a gorgeous course in Parker. I went there when the U.S. Senior PGA was there in 2010.

‘10 Senior PGA was one of the wackiest finishes I've seen. Lehman, Frost and Couples are in a playoff and while Lehman is on the green of the first playoff hole in two, Frost and Couples are hitting it from all over the county. IIRC, one of them hit a ball four inches off the ground because the ball was wedged in a bush. Eventually Lehman says something to his caddie like, "What do these guys lie?"

Unfortunately our guy lost. Dug too big of a hole early and made a pretty game rally to get within one through 16. (Down 4 through 9). Wish I could have watched, but I was working our Senior Amateur Championship match (as photographer, writer and forward observer for the referee; the last part is actually pretty easy when both dudes hit just about every fairway and there are no Rules issues, very clean match).

The dudes left are studs. Dylan Menante is a name to watch. Played at Pepperdine and transferred to UNC for his final year for the social aspect, i.e., he wanted to be able to live the full college experience and go to football games and such, which of course is not a thing in Malibu. He won the Northeast Amateur earlier this year and is eighth in the WAGR. He'll get Sam Bennett tomorrow, who's No. 3. Bennett beat mid-am stud Stew Hagestad today. Elite golf worth watching if you have the time this weekend.

Watched some of it today. Good stuff.

Good week by Nicholas Gross to reach the quarters -- as a 15-year-old.

I only had a twosome at Harding Park (2020 PGA) yesterday and we got paired with two incoming freshmen ladies on scholarship from a local D1 program. They were both all of 18 and damn it was wonderful to watch. Just a different sound coming off the club. One of them flubbed the 2nd shot on a par 5 for some reason and was 210 out. I was ahead a bit and waiting and she hits just a screaming 3 wood to 10 ft, not something that rolled up too. She almost jarred 150 8 iron and left herself 6" for birdie. Ho-hum, 3 birdies and probably a 72. Her teammate wasn't far behind either. Fun to watch.

I've told this story before but seeing Harding Park makes me smile, as the site of my all-time favorite moment in the biz. I was covering the Champions Tour finale and a PR rep asked me if I wanted to talk to Willie Mays in the clubhouse (nahhh, I'm really just here for the tournament). Was just me and Ron Kroichick from the Chronicle, listening to whatever golf stories Willie wanted to tell. He mentioned he met Tom Watson years ago and played catch with his son. So I waited for Watson after the round and relayed that story, Watson lit up into a huge smile, squeezed my arm and said with incredulity, "my son played catch with Willie Mays!"

Isn’t Colorado Golf Club the Crenshaw track with the insanely long par 5?
    Like 740 or something?

Crenshaw was the co-designer of Colorado Golf Club. First hole is 653.

TPC Berthoud in northern Colorado is where the Korn Ferry plays.

    13th plays 773 (par-4; kidding). 7,991 from the tips.
