Don't know what it's like in other states, but everywhere I've worked in California has a JV game preceding the varsity. One injury holding up the JV game can throw off the best plans. And don't get me started on extended halftime for Homecoming.

I usually tweet when I string to a hashtag the paper has. Was covering a Little League game last month and a follower asked if could set up a cloud and do play-by-play. Uh, no.

Some states in the Midwest (Illinois and Iowa) used to be like that with the JV games. I remember varsity games not kicking off until 8. No good.

Here they are generally the day before or after the varsity game, depending on the day it is played, and at the opposite site of where varsity played. So if varsity was home, JV is on the road.

Yeah, they don't leave varsity start time to chance here, either. JVs on Monday, freshmen on Thursday.

Usually a Thursday JV game or a Saturday morning doubleheader (freshman and 9, JV at 11). There used to be some subvarsity games on Fridays but those have been banned because it's all hands on deck to get the varsity games covered.

One thing I've encountered is a hard 7:30 start for varsity games. If the JV game ends early due to running clock, etc., the varsity will still start at 7:30, since that's the start time they told fans.

Schools that can support freshman football play Thursdays.

In Santa Cruz County, we've got a couple of schools without lights, so they play Saturday afternoon. And with the officials shortage, we're seeing more Thursday night games to keep all games covered.

Just in the Denver metro area, they are trying to move 68 varsity games off Friday nights. We're down to 19 crews. A lot of schools play at district stadiums, so crews will work doubleheaders sometimes.

Denver Public Schools will schedule a Saturday tripleheader at its district stadium (10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m.).

Never worked anywhere that had sub-varsity games on Friday. But Valdosta and Lowndes still do 8 pm kickoffs to emphasize the fact they are still King Shit on the South Georgia football food chain.

At least in RI, junior varsity football games would always be on Monday or Tuesday after the varsity games. I was told that it was mostly a hedge against injuries, since most varsity teams would dress pretty much all their JV players except the meekest freshmen. (i.e. If a couple of your varsity linemen go down, then you might want to use a JV kid, but for player safety you don't want him gassed from playing his JV game earlier that night or on a Wednesday or Thursday.) I have no clue when JV even plays in Texas, because between the roster size for varsity football, the bands, the cheer squads and so on, they were actually offering less sports than I was used to in Rhode Island.

Three hours of work, more likely four hours, for $40? State minimum wage law does not apply here because the paper considers these folks "contract employees?"

Fredrick Formula applies here, too: work 7, paid 4.
