If the media depictions of him in The Queen and The Crown have any basis, Charles is acutely aware of the risks of accidentally stoking Republicanism. Though having interests in organic farming, climate change and architecture are perfectly fine, he's also been outed as a devotee of homeopathy and some goofy religious stuff over the years.

Britain is going to be dealing with quite a shitstorm over the next five years or so as the economic, political and cultural bills for Brexit come due. Perhaps the novelty of a new king will deflect people's attention a little bit from skyrocketing energy prices and/or the potential loss of Scotland and/or Northern Ireland from union. Charles' manner, awkward and detached as it may be, might be helpful in that those three-piece suits and RP vowels evoke the 'stiff upper lip' ethos. That, or the British people will be far more pissed at their elected leaders than they are at the monarch.

That is true. I just think it's part of his makeup, intellectually and curiosity-wise, though, and that it doesn't necessarily mean he's an overly weird or bad person, or that he'd be a poor king.

I've said before that I've long been interested in the workings and foibles of the royals, have read a lot of books and news accounts, and feel like I'm pretty knowledgeable/informed about them as people (as much as that's possible for outsiders who, let's face it, don't really know them), and I get the sense that Charles is basically a good, even sentimental man, and one who will work hard to do well in his role as king. Everything I've ever read from those who report frequently and closely about him, and have long done so, tells me the same thing.

His marriage to Diana and the initial disallowing of a marriage to his true love, Camilla, were mistakes that both he and Queen Elizabeth were complicit in. But, as I also have seen quoted, from Camilla to him, actually, "If those things hadn't happened, you wouldn't have had the boys."

Who's the court jester? I hope it's not unfunny James Corden or Craig Ferguson.

Ricky Gervais would be brilliant at it. Greg Davies (whom I've never heard of) is highly rated too.

Prince Philip was a very handsome man and Elizabeth was cute in her day. Can't explain why their 4 kids all looked shite.

Ten days of mourning is pushing it, though. A quick spin around the internet tells me that this is about three or four days longer than it took to bury both Kennedys combined.

Good grief, Don Lemon is struggling to do live coverage of the procession to Edinburgh. On the plus side, when their correspondents interview people in the crowd we are getting some magnificent Scottish accents.
