I guess I'm just old school then. I still put some merit in the thinking, "Did Player X make a difference for his team?"
If the Angels and Yankees were on the same level this season, I'd give more weight to Ohtani. But if you take Ohtani off the Angels they're still a shitty team. If you take Judge off the Yankees they might not win the division and might even be scrapping for a wild card spot.
    I guess that's a non-statistical evaluation of WAR.

Now swap them. We should be able to use some critical thinking skills.

If we swap them, we're having the same argument, right? Just reversed?

    Seems silly then.

    The whole thing is silly.
Maybe they can come up with a new MVP metric and just take all of the guesswork out of it.

Seems like people can do that themselves.

But whatever answer they come up with is wrong. The message board/sports talk radio industrial complex depends on it.

No problem with Judge getting it, but to dismiss Ohtani because of his shit ass teams record is dumb.

What Ohtani does is amazing. There will be no argument with that. But he will have better pitching seasons. He was lit up a few times.

Yankees who have hit 50 or more HRs in a season, twice:
    Babe Ruth
    Mickey Mantle
    Aaron Judge.

    That’s the list.

    Irrelevant to the conversation.

I don't think anybody dismissing Ohtani. Batman is considering his team's record as one among many factors. I agree with that approach.

Kenny's analysis, if I remember correctly, didn't factor in team record at all. It just looked at run prevention and run production, including pitching, hitting, and defense.

Edit: I think this is the right video. This is from the end of August.
