I’m the biggest Ohtani fan I know. He’s a generational talent, the likes of which I’ve never seen and likely never will again.

Aaron Judge is, without question, the 2022 AL MVP.

Everything’s fine unless he tests positive.

The idea that if Judge wasn’t on the Yankees they wouldn’t be in contention specious at best. You have to assume that they would have another pretty good player in his spot. Would they be where they are? Probably not. But does that mean they couldn’t be close?

Last time Giants signed a free agent MVP turned out pretty good…..just sayin’. I love Otani but it’s Judge this year.

A pretty good player is a long way from what Judge is doing this year. Maybe they are battling for a wild card spot right now without him. Maybe.

Some might say Joey Gallo was the most important Yankee.

This 4-game win streak notwithstanding, the Yanks are 17-22 since he left.

    They have 10 left with the Sox (4), Jays (3) and O's (3) ...

    ... won't happen ...

... but would be funny if they lose all 10 or 8 out of 10 ...

... and the Jays somehow eke out the East title.

Vaguely. They're going to have to sweep the Blue Jays this weekend. Just winning two and picking up a game won't do it. Not enough time left.

He supplanted Aaron Hicks in RF when he came up. The Yankees subsequently threw $70M at Hicks to lock him up for seven years. The Yankees (for some reason) love Aaron Hicks. Aaron Hicks would have been the player in Judge’s spot if he wasn’t with the Yankees.

For a few weeks it looked like Matt Carpenter was MVP.

I have watched the majority of their games this season and highlights from the rest. They have a lot of really good players. But for about two months, the way they disappeared all at once or were injured, was incredible after the start the team had.

The Yankees might have had a pretty good player in Judge's spot, but they already had a lot of pretty good players even with Judge. ... Giancarlo Stanton, DJ Lemahieu, Gleyber Torres, Josh Donaldson, Anthony Rizzo, and they added Matt Carpenter (who was on fire and then got hurt) and Andrew Benintendi. ... and even with that roster, I can't count how many games they would have lost without Judge accounting for the 1 or 2 runs they managed to scratch out. Their pitching has been good enough where they probably would be in the mix for a wild card spot either way, so I get what you are saying, but I really can't say for sure that they'd be sitting in contention if Judge hadn't been in the lineup. He has meant that much to them, especially in a lot of games where nobody else was doing jack squat.

It we swap them, Ohtani’s the first active player voted into the Hall of Fame by now.

    Current combined WAR, per Fangraphs:

    Judge: 9.8
    Otani: 8.2
