After the funeral I was listening to NPR talking over the chances that this was the last big moment for the British Royalty. I kinda put myself in the shoes of an ordinary Brit my age. She was the only queen he'd have known for his entire life, and no matter what stupidity her family got up to you could not question her steadfast devotion to duty. Now these Americans are talking about the crown and colonialism, shit talking about the queen, wondering if the system will survive. It's easy to hear him thinking "After the train wreck the U.S. has foisted on the world since 2016 they want to talk trash about the monarchy?"

 

The Brits haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory during that time, either.

Part of me understands the appeal of having a titular head of state divorced from the inherently chaotic process of democracy as government as a national unity measure. But part of me remembers that 1. Great Britain is obviously falling apart and 2. They beheaded a king once.

You should read William Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich sometime when you have six or seven months (seriously) to spare. In it he writes about what Christian churches became (at least per the code) under Hitler. No Bible. Only Mein Kampf. I shuddered when I read about it and, frankly, I shudder to this day at the thought.
