I wonder if we can apply the same sort of logic to China as well? Could it be both of the adversaries we’ve spent so much on to defend against are actually paper tigers (albeit armed with nukes, of course).

Well, if you are a member of the military industrial complex, it's not good for business if you don't overestimate the threat of your adversaries - whatever the actual level of threat they pose is.

 

The last couple of times Uncle Sam went all out in a shooting war, the results weren’t exactly Georgia Tech-Cumberland either. Maybe nobody in the world is as great at this as they imagine so we all better get our shit together diplomatically.

 

Having spent trillions on our military intelligence apparatus since the end of WW II, how did we not know the current state of things in the Russian military? Incredible.
