    That's why we can't just up our production and laugh at OPEC. If it's drill, babied here it still goes into the global market. It's not like we could just make up the difference and let the rest of the world deal with a price increase.

    All of the OPEC producers combined do about 30 million barrels a day.

    They don't call it a cartel for nuthin!

    Seriously, their cartel power is somewhat limited. For one thing, they only produce about 40 percent of the world's oil. The U.S. alone produces enough oil to have almost as much impact on global prices as they do. In terms of this cut, a lot of their members were already not hitting their quotas, so it's not going to be 2 million barrels coming off the market, it's actually going to be less than a million barrels a day. And if they cut and they get to where they all are hitting their quotas, there will be incentive for their members to cheat, which is where cartels run into trouble.
