IF, big IF, somehow Russia is driven from Ukraine, is that right there with Vietnam? Afghanistan pullout (by USSR)?

    Asking for a friend.

Way worse, really. UKR is right next door to Russia. They invaded in force with full armor and air arms accompanying the army. They took a lot of land and then were thrown right back out. They've lost much of their armor. They have more dead in less than nine months that we did in eight years of Vietnam. Their army has been outed as a sham, a paper tiger.

Afghanistan, nobody ever holds that, starting with Alexander the Great.

In terms of a modern comparison ... maybe France in 1940? Even though it was the invadee and not the invader, France had the largest army in the world at the time. It was utterly routed in a month and exposed as a sham on every organizational level.
Seems a little similar to what's happening to Russia.

Alexander also died unexpectedly and it fell apart from there.

A supporting article that raises an interesting question. If being preoccupied by World War I cost the French in 1940, which previous war are the Russians fighting now? Syria? Chechnya? Afghanistan?
Why did France lose to Germany in 1940?

I don't think Russia was fighting a previous war, I think that Putin believed his own propaganda and what he was hearing from all the voices in his personal echo chamber.

If there is any callback, it's that the Ukrainians were willing to fight like hell and die to defend (and to free) their homeland in much the same way as the Russians did when Hitler invaded.

He probably thought it would go like the annexation of Crimea, which happened in less time than it took Bill Murray and the gang to get in and out of Czechoslovakia.

Zelensky might decide otherwise for the good of his country, but I doubt the Ukrainians are in any mood to accept a peace offering from Russia anyhow. This is a stone's throw from becoming a rout, if it isn't one already.

Ok historians, (not me) has any country EVER been routed, eg suffered seemingly losses like Russia then come back to actually be the victor?
