Team success should be at least some part of the equation for MVP, but not for Cy Young. The latter is for the best pitcher. The former is about value.

That said, the primary obstacle for Ohtani for Cy Young is Verlander, who had a better season.

I still say being a top-five hitter AND top-five pitcher should win you MVP every year someone doesn't hit 62 home runs.

Yeah, that guy is pretty much the only one reporting that. He either got a hell of a scoop or he got burned. (Or he just made it up, which is less likely.)

The hilarious hire would be Joe Maddon.

There’s always LaRussa’s former third base coach

Ohtani isn't a top-five hitter. Judge, Goldschmidt, Ramirez, Alonso, Machado, and Alvarez were all better. There is an argument to be made for others, too.

I'm not even sure he was a top-five pitcher this year given that all of the other guys in the conversation threw more innings. Verlander and Alcantara were simply better by any measure. Manoah had a lower ERA, lower WHIP, and he threw 30 more innings. Urias doesn't strike guys out at anywhere near Ohtani's rate, but he also had a lower ERA and WHIP over more innings. There are arguments to be made for Burnes and Cease, too.

    Top-10, top-15, whatever. He's still a unicorn.
