Huh. As a non sailor or military guy, I’ve always heard heading in the context of direction of travel. Course is how you go from A to B with twists and turns and heading is the direction of travel at a given moment. As context of how I understood the term. So I can’t have a heading if I’m not actually going anywhere. Again, as context of where I was coming from.

    So learn something new.

I've always heard the same thing about their fighter jets.
American airfields are cleaned regularly and the grass kept low so that bits of debris don't get sucked into engines. Russian airfields are overgrown with weeds and they don't scour them for trash like the Americans do. So Russian planes are built accordingly, with things like covers for their engine intakes. The MiG-29 is basically a flying tank, and it's not because it needs to be that way to survive combat.

Yep, runways and flight decks. It's called a FOD walkdown. "Flying Objects and Debris"

If you look at nautical charts, the compass rose will show both true north and magnetic north plus give you the variable and annual increase.

Russia: Bombing civilian areas didn’t work, so let’s try bombing power stations and piss off everyone else.

The full list is incredible. It just keeps going, and going, and going ...
Russia has lost more than 7,000 ground vehicles of all types (tanks, trucks, missile systems, armored fighting vehicles, etc.), plus a few hundred planes, ships and other assorted items. And that's just the stuff this outfit been able to visually confirm.
Plus, about a third of those losses have been captured by the Ukrainians, which means they're being put back into the fight against the Russians. As it was said before, even with all of the money pouring into Ukraine the country's biggest military supplier is still Russia. I wonder if there's ever been a war where one country was able to utilize captured equipment on this kind of scale?

Russia has confirmed losses of about 25 percent of its fleet of attack Ka-52 helicopters, which would be roughly their equivalent to our Apaches.

USGS maps show true north, magnetic north and celestial north. Military maps add "grid north."
