The NYT and The Athletic

Some interesting things in there. Seems like what's getting the most attention on social media is NYT people not wanting Athletic writers to identify themselves as NYT employees, which I can understand to an extent. I don't see it as a "high horse" issue, for the most part. If NYT and Athletic reporters are working on the same story, and both contacting people as NYT reporters, there's a lot of potential for problems, especially if it's on a sensitive subject. I can't imagine the NYT and Athletic are working so closely together that each is fully aware of the other's story budgeting (nor want to be).

    From the story:

Businesses change... but this is exactly what The Athletic was *not* supposed to produce — breaking news content.

The paydays to certain writers are very interesting. On the surface, it appears people who had significant equity were bought out at nearly $1 million while retaining their current salaries. That is not a ringing long-term endorsement, but props to those folks for getting their money.

Somehow I think it's fitting that a guy from the New York Times moves over to a pure sports vertical despite not knowing how rabid sports fans are about news involving their team.

Little things like this are why others paint the NYT as elitist and out of touch. It's usually an unfair, broad brush...but then you get shit like this.

The Athletic should have a Rucker Park beat writer.

Feels like Lindsey Adler is kind of a big loss for them

It felt like the handwriting was on the wall when they brought Chris Kirschner onto her beat about 3/4 of the way through the season.

She’s good but I don’t think very many people are “losses” for The Athletic at this point. The operation is going to have to shed a lot of folks.

The Athletic doesn’t make any money on its own. It holds a fascination for younger journalists who would like to not have to write 9 stories a week on a beat.

That's pretty attractive to journalists of any age.
