In 1995 the Milwaukee Journal and Sentinel merged on April Fool's day with an April 4 election looming and little tactical planning other than to wing it. It was the second-worst clusterfuck I've ever seen in a newsroom.

One of the architects of that mess joined our group — now owned by Gatehouse — a few years later, and that was a major issue among the proletariat.

Maybe if GateNett were self-aware, we all wouldn't be in this mess.

(I will haul that opinion back into the workshop.)

Gannet Q3 financial results were just announced. They are much worse than Q2 (I know Q2 was a disaster but Q3 is worse). Company revenue was down 10.9% in Q3 from 2021. In Q2 it was 6.9%. Digital revenues declined in Q3 by a little more than 2.3%. In Q2 digital revenues had increased 1.5%. The company had a 54-million-dollar loss in Q3.

The company announced they were going cost savings of 200 to 240 million dollars a year. They are losing money at the rate of over 200 million dollars a year so the cost cuts would plug that hole. But the rapidly declining revenues are only going to make the hole bigger. The company has to stabilize revenues.

My local paper's guild, and many in the country, walk off the job today in protest of their expired contract.

It lasted long enough for Mike Reed to add about $1,917 to his bank account.

Jim Currow? He had his faults, but he was a deer in the headlights in Milwaukee. I remember him delivering papers door to door during the merger. Three months later he was unemployed. Sharks patrolled the "employee-owned" Journal Communications group.
